    Please help with my cause!

    Hello,

In February of 2006, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I had a blood sugar level of 560 (90 -100 is normal) and my A1C was at 18 (5.6 is Normal). While this news came as a total shock, it helped to explain many of the symptoms I had the previous year. I experienced extreme fatigue, lingering sports injuries, energy crashes and extreme thirst; we are talking stuck in the dessert without water for days kind of thirst. After starting insulin therapy and using the Animas 2020 insulin pump, I was able to lower my blood sugar levels and noticed immediate improvements in how I felt. I completed my third Ironman that August (2007). This helped me realize that I could be just as active with diabetes and there was no reason why others couldn’t too. By participating in these races, I hope to set an example for diabetics of all ages that they may, too, achieve whatever goals they set for themselves. Above all, I hope to create a larger awareness by connecting with more diabetics and inspiring them to choose a healthy lifestyle.
On November 22, I will be competing in Ironman Arizona for TEAM TRIABETES, a non-profit organization with the mission of “Changing the lives of people with diabetes through fitness, adventure travel, educational outreach, and web-based community support." They are a 501(c)3 nonprofit public benefit corporation.
I have challenged myself not only to Race Ironman, but to raise $6,000 to help fund Insulindependence/Triabetes,

    - Goal = Raise $6,000. A grassroots effort to spread the word about the importance of utilizing exercise as a key component of managing blood glucose levels and general diabetes health to avoid the complications associated with this disease such as blindness, amputation, stroke, heart disease, etc..

A project that Insulindependence manages, Triabetes, has documented the life changing influence that this one project has had on 12 Type 1 Ironman "athletes" as well as the kids they have mentored, their "TRIABUDDIES." The trailers for this documentary can be viewed at http://www.vimeo.com/2722286 .
